The fertilization of an egg by the sperm during ovulation is termed as pregnancy. Some of the common symptoms of a pregnancy are missing the period, spotting, headache, constipation, weight gain, heartburn and cramps. The field of study which deals with pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period is termed as obstetrics. The period of pregnancy is broadly divided into three time frames, the first trimester, second trimester and third trimester. Obstetrics is involved in providing prenatal care during these three time periods, in order to avoid complications during pregnancy. A few complications which require medical attention are gestational diabetes, preterm labor, high blood pressure and miscarriage. This book discusses the fundamentals as well as modern approaches to the field of obstetrics. It will help the readers in keeping pace with the rapid changes in this field. The book is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.
