Drug delivery refers to a process or method of administering medications or drugs and other xenobiotics to people or animals for achieving a desired therapeutic impact. It aims to modify the pharmacokinetics and specificity of a drug by formulating it with different combinations of medical devices, excipients, and drug carriers. Ointments, pills, intravenous solutions, and eye drops are the most common methods of drug administration. Lately, various new drug delivery approaches have been developed. These approaches include drug entrapment in tiny vesicles injected into the bloodstream, chemical drug modification, and drug entrapment in nanocarriers placed in desired bodily compartments. Different drug delivery approaches can maximize therapeutic efficacy and reduce side effects by influencing a drug compund’s absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination (ADME). This book provides significant information to help develop a good understanding of methodologies and novel approaches to drug delivery. It is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.
