Portuguese emigration has increased ever since Portugal became a member of the European Economic Community. The main causes of increasing rate of emigration in Portugal have been global financial crisis, job insecurity, high unemployment and deteriorating working conditions. The economic crisis of 2008 and the budget cuts which followed were a major factor which has influenced migration. Since most of the emigrants are highly educated, their migration has caused a significant loss of human capital in Portugal. The main objective for migration has been to find employment and better opportunities abroad.
